Family Programs & Events

The Calvert Marine Museum is a family museum and every day is an opportunity to create family memories. To take full advantage of our offerings, we encourage you to consider membership in the museum. We offer special programming during all school holidays. Be sure to check out the Calendar of Events for details. 

Public Programming

There is something scheduled almost every day at the museum. There are trained docents in the Discovery Room at the touch tank, in the Skates and Rays exhibit, and in the Paleontology Prep Lab. The Drum Point Lighthouse is open, frequently with guided tours. You can also see the aquarists feeding the animals on the following schedule:

Monday at 10:15 a.m.: Skates and Rays Feeding
Tuesday at 1:15 p.m.: Aquarists Feed the Otter a Snack
Wednesday at 11:15 a.m.: Critter Feeding in the Discovery Room

Scheduled every fourth Saturday from 2 - 4 p.m. we offer Toy Boat Building. See the calendar for details.

Gingerbread Lighthouse

Sundays, December 10 & 17:
Gingerbread Lighthouse Workshop
Build and decorate your own Gingerbread Lighthouse and Keeper's Cottage! Sessions at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Register at the admission desk on the day of programs. Space is limited. Fee is $4 per child with admission. Activity is appropriate for ages 4 and older.

Saturday, December 23: Ornament Workshop
Each participant will receive a kit and instructions to create three fun and festive holiday ornaments! Sessions at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Register at the admission desk the day of the program. Space and materials are limited. Fee is $4 per child with admission. Activity appropriate for ages 4 and older.

Christmas Ornament

Tuesday, December 26: Snow Globe Workshop
Create your own winter wonderland in a jar with recycled materials. Every 30 minutes on the half hour stating at 1 p.m. while supplies last. Sessions limited to 20 participants. Sign up in the Discovery Room. Ages 4 and older. Fee is $2 per child with admission.

Wednesday, December 27: Winter Wildlife
Discover the animals that make the wintry waters of the Chesapeake their home. Check the daily events schedule at the admissions desk for special program times. FREE with admission.

Thursday, December 28: Winter Industry
Learn about working the Bay waters in the winter. Discover the secrets of harvesting oysters while learning about traditional Chesapeake work boats and take a guided tour of the Lore Oyster House. LOH open from 1-4 p.m. Check the daily events schedule at the admission desk for tour times. FREE with admission.

Friday, December 29: Blizzards & Bones
Discover which animals adapted to Ice Age changes and which faced extinction while exploring our Treasures From the Cliffs exhibit. Excavate a fossil and make your own fossil mold at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Ages 4 and older. FREE with admission.

Saturday, December 30: New Year's with the Lighthouse Keeper
Play period games and help decorate the lighthouse for the New Year with the lighthouse keeper. Check daily events schedule at the admissions desk. FREE with admission.

Sunday, December 31: NOON Year's Eve Party for members only!
Harms Gallery, 10:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Make a party hat, New Year's wish ornament, and join the dance party with Bubbles the otter. Toast in the new year with sparkling ginger ale and fishy snacks when the ball drops at high noon. FREE for members of all ages!
